Cromer Pier Christmas Show - Cromer Pavilion Theatre (16.11.2024)

If you're looking for an injection of festive spirit and colour to lighten these wintry days, you could do worse than spending an evening (or afternoon) in the company of the talented cast of the annual Cromer Pier Christmas Show.

From the moment we're introduced to the company in their opening sequence, what follows is a non-stop couple of hours filled with joy, laughter, and wondrous entertainment.

As the host, Olly Day is the consummate entertainer, interspersing his largely local themed comedy routines and skits with some hilariously put together magic demonstrations. He's also able to show off his silky smooth vocals in the odd singalong, in an all-round show of versatility - it's his 15th year hosting the Christmas show, and it's easy to see why Olly is a favourite in these parts.

Vocalists Tilly Beck and Finlay McKillop impress throughout in a smorgasbord of festive numbers, including carols (given a contemporary twist), classic Christmas chart-toppers, and songs from musicals.

Not so much supporting the show as elevating it on their energetic shoulders is the ensemble cast, who dance with an impressive verve and precision, ensuring each musical number is given great visual appeal too. Olly Day introduces them as "the hardest working troupe in the East Coast" and my goodness do they prove him right.

Adding a touch of class to proceedings is violinist Bertie Bow, whose brilliant arrangements of classic Christmas songs and movie soundtracks is utterly enchanting. Particular favourite for me is the goosebump-inducing blending of O Holy Night and the iconic theme from Home Alone.

Last but by no means least, magician/illusionist Richard Griffin thoroughly impresses with his slick sleight of hand tricks, and his impressive laser illusion piece. He also shows he's game for a laugh, combining brilliantly with Olly Day in a couple of comedy sketches too.

Musical Director Nigel Hogg plays the Christmas curmudgeon role well, but with his beautiful arrangements, his love for his craft is obvious.

The ensemble numbers are boosted with the aid of a striking, interactive backdrop, and combined with the wonderful costumes, creates a joyous spectacle.

It's a very special production, and one which I'm sure is already an annual tradition for many families - if you've not been before, I urge you to check it out. The Cromer Pier Christmas Show continues until the 29th December - visit cromerpier.co.uk for details
